The Last Of Us Showrunners Are Thinking About Spin-Offs

The showrunners behind The Last Of Us on HBO are considering their options with potential spin-offs. Joel and Ellie’s story is set to continue with a second season after Craig Mazin recently indicated the HBO drama could run for as many as four seasons, creating a surplus of opportunities to branch out and tell other stories. However, the showrunners are being cautious. Their first priority is to complete Joel and Ellie’s story.

“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” said Mazin (courtesy of an interview with The Wrap). “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well.”

If they can find the right story, then Mazin is open to the idea. The Chernobyl creator says the story would have to be “something that made sense” and expressed hope “that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.”

Not long after The Last Of Us adaptation concluded, Neil Druckmann revealed details of a prequel series focusing on Ellie’s mother, Anna. The prequel was described as a “ little character drama” that explored the “themes of parental love for their child.”
