Microsoft Acquisition Of Activision Blizzard Approved By CMA

Microsoft’s revised acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been authorised by the CMA – the Competitions and Markets Authority – based in the UK. The CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, shared a statement with employees to announce the news. “Today, the CMA, the regulatory authority in the UK, approved our transaction with Microsoft.”

“We now have all regulatory approvals necessary to close and we look forward to bringing joy and connection to even more players around the world,” the statement continues. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the president of Microsoft, Brad Smith, said: “We’re grateful for the CMA’s thorough review and decision today. We have now crossed the final regulatory hurdle to close this acquisition, which we believe will benefit players and the gaming industry worldwide.”

Microsoft recently reconfigured the deal – giving cloud gaming rights for any current and new Activision Blizzard titles into the hands of Ubisoft – which in turn secured provisional clearance from the CMA in September. Xbox chief Phil Spencer hailed it as “a positive development and a welcome indicator that our hard work is bringing us closer to our goal.”

With the acquisition secure, the deal will likely close in the coming weeks as Microsoft welcome Activision Blizzard (as well as King) under their banner.
