Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remaster Gets August Release Date

After several delays, an official trailer has dropped, revealing that the highly anticipated remaster of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles will be coming later this year. The game will release on August 27, 2020, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android.

Originally released in 2003 for the GameCube, Crystal Chronicles represented the Final Fantasy franchise’s return to Nintendo consoles after nearly a decade. (Before this, the last Final Fantasy title seen on Nintendo hardware had been Final Fantasy VI in 1994). Although it was not a “main” numbered title in the series, Crystal Chronicles featured classic Final Fantasy stories, monsters, and combat.

Up to four players could team up in local multiplayer to protect the world’s magical crystals from infection by a deadly evil force called Miasma. Although the game was well-received, it did garner some criticism for requiring multiple GameBoy Advance units to connect to a GameCube to enable multiplayer.

In 2018, a remastered of Crystal Chronicles was officially announced by publisher Square Enix. The title was initially slated for a 2019 release date but was delayed several times due to requiring additional work to “polish” the game.

The remaster, now hitting shelves in August, will feature the original Crystal Chronicles characters and story in all-new HD. It has also been confirmed to feature new dungeons and new monsters and bosses to fight. Also, the brand new “Mimic” function will allow player characters to take on the appearance of various NPCs as they travel and fight.

Online multiplayer will be enabled, allowing for cross-play across all platforms. Now, you can team up with your friends without having to bring along multiple GameBoy systems and connect them all to a single Cube. This improved multiplayer functionality will allow a new generation of gamers to experience Crystal Chronicles like new before.
