Macy’s Parade Unveils Pokémon 25th Anniversary Logo

Earlier this week, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company teased that a big announcement was coming during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where beloved character Pikachu would be making his twentieth consecutive appearance as a balloon in the parade.

The third version of the Pikachu balloon, which features a comfy-looking scarf and an adorable snowman mini-Pikachu, made its appearance in the abbreviated COVID-safe 2020 version of the parade. It was accompanied by a group of dancers dressed as Pikachu and multiple different versions of Pokémon TV show protagonist Ash Ketchum, each wearing a variation on his iconic hat and jacket combination. The dancers performed a routine set to the original Pokémon theme song.

At the end of the dance, the performers officially revealed the logo for the franchise’s 25th anniversary celebration, which kicks off in 2021. The logo features a simple version of Pikachu’s head and ears, with the Pokémon’s signature bright red cheeks replaced with the numbers “2” and “5”.

Fan speculation is already abuzz wondering what the 25th anniversary celebration of the franchise could bring. Current popular theories include a remake of the Sinnoh region games (Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum), further updates to mobile game Pokémon Go, re-releases of older games for Nintendo Switch, and a brand new entry in the series celebrating the 25th anniversary. Some fans also suspect additional expansions and downloadable content for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, which recently received the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs for adventurous trainers to explore.

Some fans are also hoping that the Pikachu balloon’s costume might make an appearance in Pokémon Go. Holiday versions of Pikachu and other Pokémon have appeared in previous years, but the signature scarf-and-snowman version of the Electric-type Pokémon has not yet made its way into the mobile game.

What announcements do you hope to see during Pokémon’s 25th anniversary? Let us know!
