We’ve been seeing some spectacular TV adaptations of video games in recent years. From The Last of Us to Fallout to Arcane, these adaptations are proof that honoring the source material is a recipe for a pop culture darling. Hot off the success of Fallout, streaming service Amazon is also working on bringing the famed God of War franchise to TV screens, with showrunner Ron Moore, famous for the mid 2000s Battlestar Galactica reboot, to the helm. We don’t know much more than that at this point, other than that Amazon has allegedly already ordered two seasons of the show.
There has also been plenty of speculation as to who could take on the mantle of the Ghost of Sparta, but as of this writing, no casting announcements have been made. In the interest of having some fun speculation, let’s fan cast our perfect lineup for some of the characters we could potentially see in the show!
Freya – Katheryn Winnick
Perhaps most well known for her stint as Lagertha on the hit TV show Vikings, this would not be Winnick’s first foray into Norse mythology and television. Winnick would perfectly embody the qualities of Freya: crafty, resourceful, wise, and very capable of wrecking anyone who threatens her beloved son Baldur. The shift from shieldmaiden to Vaneir goddess would certainly be a big one, but Winnick’s flexibility makes her perfectly suited for the task.
Baldur – Bill Skarsgård
Baldur is essentially half-insane thanks to the curse placed on him by his mother, and his centuries long thirst for revenge. Skarsgård is an ideal feet, with an impressive rap sheet of playing unhinged madmen. With turns in the films It, The Crow, and Nosferatu, Skarsgård has more than proven his ability to take the mantle of Baldur and his unsettling mannerisms. Seeing him knocking on Kratos’ door at the show’s start would certainly be chilling.
Thor – Ryan Hurst
It’s hard to pinpoint anyone else who could do justice to the God of Thunder. Hurst’s performance as the character in 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok immortalized him as both terrifying and deeply sympathetic villain. Hurst brought a sort of softness to the character in his facial expression, voice, and mannerisms, and he would be the perfect fit to reprise his role and take up that mighty hammer.
Mimir – Billy Connolly
I can’t think of a more charming Scotsman to take on the role of the Smartest Man Alive. Not sure how the CGI of a talking head is going to work, but Connolly is a no brainer to provide life to the wise cracking and highly knowledgeable disembodied head on Kratos’ butt. I’d already pay any amount of money just to hear Connolly read the phone book. Having him regale us with tales of Norse myth would be a gift to all mankind.
Atreus – Tom Holland
Okay I know at this point Tom is borderline too old, but hear me out. Holland’s ability to charm in his turn as Spider-Man in the Marvel universe has made him a downright gem in the industry. While he definitely couldn’t take on the role of a young Atreus, he would perfectly embody the angsty, curious, and rebellious energy of teen Atreus that was so prominent within Ragnarok. And with his impressive skill set as a performer, he’d easily be able to nail his own stunts. Seems like a win to me.
Kratos – Jason Momoa
Aside from the rumors that Momoa has expressed interest in the role, let’s just point out the obvious: impressive physique. Sick tattoos. Majestic beard. Deep voice. A smolder that could knock your socks off. Those qualities alone make him a slam dunk for the part. When you consider his badass combat abilities as seen in Game of Thrones, Aquaman, or Dune, it further solidifies his qualifications. And no, I’m not biased simply because I am in love with him. That’s only a very small part of it.
