The first age rating has been published for Final Fantasy XVI, and ironically, it’s a 16+. The classification was shared by Gematsu on Twitter, which links to the Brazilian classification board’s official decision. We’ve attempted to translate the document using online tools, and it could give us some very interesting early details on the game. As is always the case with digital translation, there’s plenty of room for error here.
The classification page lists three main factors for the 16+ age rating: sexual content, violence and sensitive issues. Already this seems surprisingly mature for a Final Fantasy game, but it’s not a huge surprise either. The increasing amount of adult content seems to be a running trend at this point, with 2016’s Final Fantasy XV which had a 12+ rating in Brazil, whilst 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake received a 14+ age rating.
A list of indicators can be found on the full classification document for Final Fantasy XVI, and they dive a little deeper into what we can expect from the full game. The list includes gratuitous violence, torture, blood, suffering, body injuries, sex appeal, veiled nudity, innuendo, legal drug use, swearing, suffering and more. That’s quite the list – sounds like a great time, huh?
It might not be too long until we see for ourselves exactly what Final Fantasy XVI will deliver, as the last trailer also came with the news that development was almost finished. The current release period is Summer 2023, with pre-orders rumored to begin in the coming week, following (another rumored) potential new trailer and release date.
