Mortal Kombat 11 recently made its way to next-generation consoles – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S – in the form of its brand new Ultimate Edition. However, the release of the Ultimate Edition isn’t the only exciting Mortal Kombat news this week.
That’s right – the high-intensity fighting game will be receiving a skin pack inspired by the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.
The three skins included in the pack feature movie-based looks for the characters of Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade. Raiden’s “Earthrealm” skin shows the character wearing a long white robe to match his long pale hair, while “Hollywood Kombatant” Johnny Cage and “Island Bound” Sonya Blade both sport comfortable-looking casual clothes that don’t make them any less deadly on the battlefield.
But that’s not all. The new skins also feature voice clips recorded by the actors from the movie. Christopher Lambert, Linden Ashby, and Bridgette Wilson return as Raiden, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade respectively.
The “Klassic MK Movie Skin Pack” is available for purchase beginning today. It costs 5 dollars in the US and 6 pounds in the UK.
This is not the first nod to the Mortal Kombat film to appear in Mortal Kombat 11. When the villainous sorcerer Shang Tsung was added as the game’s first DLC character, actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who had played Tsung in the movie, returned to lend his voice and likeness to the game’s version of the character. It is possible that future references to the movie might be released in later updates to 11 or even later games in the series.
A rebooted version of the film, also titled Mortal Kombat, is currently in the works, starring Tadanobu Asamu as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and others. The film was originally scheduled to release in January 2021, but has been indefinitely delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Producer Todd Garner has indicated that the film will not be released until movie theaters re-open, so that it can see a theatrical rather tahan a streaming or home video release.
