The Virtual Reality division of Sony Pictures has officially announced Headshot Fever, an upcoming VR game inspired by - and set in the same universe as - the popular Zombieland film series.
The game will be set after the events of both the 2009 film Zombieland and its 2019 sequel Zombieland: Double Tap. Players will take on the role of a new zombie survivor discovered hiding inside the panic room of a mansion. From there, they will be trained as a zombie killer by the core cast of characters from the film: Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg,) Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson,) Wichita (Emma Stone,) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin).
Inspired by classic 1990s arcade shooters, the game will feature the player being challenged to defeat as many zombies as possible in a short period of time. However, it won't just be straight-up shooter gameplay - racing game inspiration will also be present as the player must make those kills while participating in a racecourse called the "Zombieland Invitational."
Columbus's zombie-killing "Rules" will be in effect, with certain types of kills such as "headshots" and "double taps" being worth a greater number of points. In addition, the player will have a variety of weapons available to use, including pistols, shotguns and even submachine guns. The player will also be able to tap into the "Adrenaline" ability, which causes time to slow down, and allows them to kill a lot of zombies in very little time.
It has not yet been announced whether Headshot Fever will be exclusively single-player or will feature a multiplayer or co-op mode - although, given the Zombieland franchise's focus on teamwork, the presence of such a mode would not be entirely unsurprising.
Zombieland: Headshot Fever is currently planned to release in Spring 2021 for the HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. A PlayStation VR release is also planned for a later, currently un-announced, release date.
