Nintendo Announces Yoshi and the Mysterious Book for Switch 2

Nintendo has officially announced Yoshi and the Mysterious Book for Switch 2, marking the beloved green dinosaur’s first solo outing in over a decade – and if the first trailer is anything to go by, it looks every bit as charming as you’d hope. The action-adventure title is set for release on May 21, 2026, with pre-orders live now via the Nintendo eShop.

The last time Yoshi led his own game was Yoshi’s Woolly World back in 2015 on Wii U – so this is a long-overdue return, and Nintendo has clearly used the wait to cook up something a little different. Players guide Yoshi through the pages of a mysterious book belonging to a character named Mr. E, interacting with the creatures inside by eating, jumping on, or carrying them to trigger environmental effects – think blooming flowers and blowing bubbles unlocking new exploration paths. Bowser Jr. pops up sporadically across the game’s habitats too, hinting at a larger role that Nintendo is keeping under wraps for now.

The game is single-player only – something that’s already sparked mild disappointment on forums like ResetEra, with fans calling it “a safe but charming return” – though IGN’s early preview praised the creature-taming mechanic as “fresh for the series, perfectly suiting Switch 2’s portability.” It supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, weighs in at around 20.6 GB, and launches across 15 languages. The reveal trailer hit 941K views within weeks, which tells you plenty about how hungry Nintendo fans are for a proper Yoshi game. With Switch 2 already dominating sales charts and Splatoon Raiders also on the horizon, Nintendo’s first-party slate for 2026 is shaping up to be seriously stacked.

Keep an eye out for a potential Nintendo Direct in late April or May 2026 – a deeper gameplay reveal feels almost certain before launch day arrives.
