Wreckreation 2 has been announced for PS5 and other platforms by newly established studio When Tides Turn – described by Push Square as largely the same development team behind the original game, now operating under a new name, with the sequel placing a noticeably sharper emphasis on chaotic arcade racing over the original’s Live Mix world-editing feature.
Here’s the context: The original Wreckreation was a swing at the open world that didn’t quite connect. Its central hook – a Live Mix creation system that let players reshape the open world and build custom challenges – was an ambitious idea that it all just felt a bit half-baked. Handling was rough, the open world lacked personality, and the overall package landed as undercooked despite genuine ambition behind the design.

When Tides Turn appears to be largely the same dev team that made the original, just under a new name, and rather than walking away from the concept, they’ve come back with a sequel. According to Push Square, the announcement trailer shows a cityscape environment with racing that draws clear visual comparisons to Burnout – which is great,
the sequel puts much more of an emphasis on the chaotic arcade racing rather than the Live Mix feature, which is encouraging. it’s all about how it feels to drive, which is great, But the proof is entirely in how the cars feel, and no trailer settles that question.
What’s also notable here is the community-first development approach. When Tides Turn is opening early PC playtests to Patreon supporters, to take part and help give feedback. I’m really hoping Wreckreation 2 can improve on what came before –
It seems Wreckreation 2 is more interested in the core action, which is encouraging.
and Patreon supporters can sign up for early playtests on PC to help give feedback. How much of the Live Mix feature carries forward is unclear.
Watch for early playtests on PC for Patreon supporters. How the driving actually feels, and whether the urban environments translate to moment-to-moment racing that holds up, will determine whether the cautious optimism around this announcement has anything real behind it. as the project develops.
Does the move away from Live Mix as the centrepiece feel like the right correction to you, or does it strip away what made Wreckreation distinct? And are you signing up for the Patreon playtests, or waiting to see a more complete build first? Let us know in the comments.
