New key art from Marvel’s Wolverine, revealed during the SDCC 2026 panel, shows Logan confronting The Hand.

Here’s the context: Insomniac has has a track record with story-driven Marvel games – the original Spider-Man in 2018, Miles Morales in 2020, and Spider-Man 2 in 2023 – and Wolverine is the studio’s next major Marvel project in that lineage. The game was first teased in 2021 with a brief announcement trailer, and As we noted in our coverage of the game’s confirmed linear structure, Insomniac is deliberately a choice this kind of deep story reveal is clearly designed to validate.

The SDCC panel brought out Creative Director Marcus Smith, Game Director Mike Daly, Sr. Project Director Jess Reiner-Reed, and Narrative Director Walt Williams, joined by cast members Liam McIntyre (Logan/Wolverine) and Krizia Bajos (Jean Grey), plus Eric Monacelli, Executive Producer at Marvel Games. The story trailer opens on an enraged Logan confronting Jean Grey in a moment of raw vulnerability, then pivots to establish The Hand as a major enemy faction and Deathstrike as one of the game’s primary antagonists. New key art dropped alongside the trailer showing Logan going head-to-head with The Hand in their trademark red garb, with Insomniac noting the two share a history players will uncover through the main campaign.

Honestly, the choice to center the story trailer on the Logan-Jean Grey dynamic rather than leading with combat spectacle is a deliberate signal about what kind of game this is. Insomniac is framing Wolverine’s story around internal conflict and emotional stakes, not just a parade of recognisable villains – and folding in Team X, in a mission to protect mutant kind, gives the narrative a moral greyness that suits the character in a way a straightforward X-Men ensemble story probably wouldn’t. The question of whether the writing will actually deliver on that framing is the only one that matters at this point, and nothing from a trailer can answer it.

The panel also announced a cross-promotion with Arc System Works: Wolverine’s suit from the upcoming fighter MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be unlockable through game progression in Marvel’s Wolverine on day one, while Marvel’s Wolverine‘s Battle Reborn suit will arrive free in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls starting September 1, 2026. Award-winning composer David Fleming was confirmed as the game’s soundtrack creator, with Insomniac describing his score as dynamically shifting alongside Logan’s globe-spanning journey. The full soundtrack releases on August 28, 2026, ahead of the game itself.

A digital prequel comic is available now – written by Walt Williams with art by Luke Ross and a cover by Iban Coello – readable via Marvel Unlimited or as a physical giveaway at SDCC. It sets up Logan’s complicated history with Team X and frames the mutant-protection stakes heading into the main campaign.

What to watch: Insomniac teased what’s to come for fans in September. and the studio has been careful to keep combat mechanics and structural details largely off the table Given the scale of this release, expect Sony to anchor at least one more major marketing beat – likely a final gameplay-focused showcase – before launch. Whether that includes any confirmation of limited hardware like a themed DualSense or PS5 bundle remains to be seen, but the absence of one so close to launch would be notable for a title of this profile.
