Skyblivion sued by former volunteer, project lead asks for legal help

The Skyblivion team, the volunteer group remaking The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion inside Skyrim’s engine, says a former volunteer is attempting to sue the project, and it is asking the community for pro bono legal help.

Project lead Rebelzize disclosed the dispute in a video statement published under the title “A former volunteer is attempting to sue Skyblivion and we need your help.” The suit reportedly centers on contributions that were excised from the project, though the plaintiff’s identity and the specific legal claims have not been made public.

Because the team works unpaid, there is no defense fund behind the project, and Rebelzize has asked lawyers willing to take the case on for free to come forward. He also asked viewers to keep the dispute from becoming a harassment campaign: “Please don’t turn this into any kind of witch hunt.”

The threat comes from inside

The remarkable part of the story is who is doing the suing. Skyblivion has spent roughly a decade building a free, ground-up remake of Oblivion, with radically redesigned dungeons and biomes, on the legal thinnest of ice: it is a fan project built on Bethesda’s intellectual property. If the project ever faced a courtroom, most observers assumed the plaintiff would be Bethesda itself. Instead, the suit comes from one of its own former contributors.

That distinction matters for other large volunteer mod projects, which rarely have formal agreements with contributors about who owns the work they submit. When a contributor leaves and their work is removed, a project built by dozens of unpaid hands has little formal ground to stand on.

What it means for the release

At last report, Skyblivion was still aiming to release in 2026, with time already running short for that goal. The suit adds new uncertainty: if the excised contributions have to be redone by other hands, that is more work on top of a schedule the team has not updated.

Bethesda, meanwhile, shipped its own commercial take on the game with Oblivion Remastered in 2025. Skyblivion is not that product: it remains a free mod for PC, and the team says its release is still planned for 2026.
