Destiny 2 Hits Lowest Steam Player Count Ever As Reviews Plummet

It’s been a hard time for Destiny 2 over the last few years. The Lightfall expansion which was intended to be the start of a dramatic and exciting conclusion for the game’s primary ‘Light and Dark’ saga was a let down for fans, which led to lesser engagement during the finale of The Final Shape. Now the main story is over, and a new one begins with The Edge of Fate, but audiences are seemingly turning their backs on the looter-shooter, as Destiny 2 just hit its lowest ever Steam player count.

The data comes from Steam Charts, which tracks the average player counts per month of any active Steam release. Destiny 2 was already off to a rough start when The Edge of Fate released to barely a third of the active 300,000+ players that usually show up for a Destiny 2 expansion launch, but the last 30 days have seen a new low. In the last month, Destiny 2 had an average of 18,074 players – that’s the worst of any recording thus far on Steam Charts, falling even further below January’s 18,542 average player count.

The upcoming Star Wars-themed expansion seems to be Destiny 2‘s only hope.

This number will surely rise again in December with the release of the Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion, but how fans actually will receive the DLC is another matter entirely. Along with the falling player count, the recent reviews on Destiny 2 are far lower than the all-time ones which are ‘Mostly Positive’, with only 24% of reviews in the last 30 days being positive. That puts the game in ‘Mostly Negative’ territory, with the current most helpful recent review reading “you can do better; save your money, life & sanity and play LITERALLY anything else”.

Do you think the Renegades expansion will be what Destiny 2 needs to reinvigorate its player count and the happiness of its community? How do you feel about the current state of Destiny 2?
