Ecco the Dolphin is making a full comeback – and not just as a straightforward remaster. Original creator Ed Annunziata has confirmed that remasters of the first two classic games and a brand new third title are all in development, reuniting the original team more than 30 years after the franchise first launched on the Sega Genesis in 1992.

The series debuted with Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis, followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time in 1994, with both games earning cult status for their eerie atmosphere, time-travelling narrative, and genuinely punishing difficulty. A 3D entry, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, arrived in 2000 for Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 – and then the franchise went completely silent for over two decades. That is a long time to leave fans waiting, and the nostalgia factor here is very real.
The collection, titled Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, bundles high-fidelity remasters of all versions of both the 1992 original and Tides of Time, preserving what the team describes as the “original, immutable games” alongside a new title that “extends the journey into the modern era.” Annunziata confirmed the project in a May 2025 Xbox interview, with development led by original composers, artists, and programmers from Novena Productions – the team that built the series from the ground up. Nintendo Switch (both original and successor models) has been confirmed as a platform, with reports suggesting a visual overhaul substantial enough to be described as a full-blown remake in places.

A countdown timer on the official site at eccothedolphin.com points to April 25, 2026, widely expected to be the moment of a full public reveal – potentially including trailers, additional platform confirmations beyond Switch, and pre-order details. Remastered audio tracks including “The Lagoon” and “Medusa Bay” have already surfaced on the site as teasers, hinting at the care being put into the audio restoration.
Community reaction has been enthusiastic, with gaming outlets praising the reunion of the original team as the kind of definitive revival that rarely happens. It sits comfortably alongside other high-profile dormant-franchise returns – much like the warm reception that greeted Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles as a lovingly handled remaster of a long-neglected classic, or the excitement around Yakuza Kiwami 3 and the broader RGG Summit 2025 announcements showing that legacy franchises still have serious momentum. The April 25 reveal cannot come soon enough.
