Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has surpassed 2 million wishlists across all platforms ahead of its September 4, 2026 release. The milestone was shared through the game’s official social media account with two weeks remaining before launch, according to Softonic and Twisted Voxel.
The upcoming action-adventure is the first brand-new mainline Onimusha game in 20 years. Capcom also moved its release date forward from September 25 to September 4, bringing the series back after a long period without a new mainline entry.

A modern return for Onimusha
Capcom is presenting Way of the Sword as a soft reboot while retaining elements associated with the series, including the Oni Gauntlet, soul absorption, Edo-period Kyoto, Miyamoto Musashi, and a lead character modeled on Toshiro Mifune.
Combat focuses on third-person swordplay, including blocks, parries, and counterattacks. Gameplay footage has also highlighted one-on-one duels and environmental interactions.

Early hands-on coverage has described tough duels and a slower, more deliberate cinematic rhythm, with some comparisons drawn to Sekiro. Capcom has said that Way of the Sword is not a Soulslike and is not an open-world game.
