IGN has reported that Assassin’s Creed Hexe is facing significant development troubles at Ubisoft – with multiple senior leaders departing the project and reports suggesting the game’s direction has undergone serious course corrections. For a title already roughly five years into development with a 2027 launch window at the earliest, that’s not a comfortable place to be.
The leadership exits paint a worrying picture. Creative director Clint Hocking left in late February 2026, level design director Luc Couture departed even earlier, and game director Benoit Richer – a nine-year Ubisoft veteran who previously worked on Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s expansions – followed in April 2026, heading to indie studio Servo Games. Ubisoft has since promoted Jean Guesdon, director of Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, to creative director in what looks like a deliberate effort to steady the ship with a trusted franchise hand. We covered earlier signs of turbulence in our reporting on the Assassin’s Creed franchise lead quitting Ubisoft, and Hexe’s situation suggests those problems haven’t gone away.

Honestly, three senior departures from a single project in the space of a few months isn’t just a personnel shuffle – it’s a signal. Reports indicate Ubisoft is scaling back Hexe‘s magical elements in favour of a more grounded approach, possibly a reaction to Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ commercial underperformance. Development insiders have reportedly used the phrase “development hell” to describe where the project currently stands, and with the broader Ubisoft restructuring – including the creation of the Vantage Studios subsidiary to house the AC franchise – there are real questions about whether Hexe‘s budget and ambitions will survive contact with a company under serious financial pressure. Guesdon is a reassuring name to have at the helm, but reassuring names don’t automatically fix years of directional uncertainty.
