Atari has acquired Implicit Conversions, the studio responsible for bringing over 100 classic titles to modern consoles – including many of the retro games available to PS Plus Premium subscribers on PS5 and PS4. As GamesBeat reported, the deal adds Implicit Conversions to an increasingly formidable retro gaming roster at Atari alongside Digital Eclipse and Nightdive.
If the name Implicit Conversions doesn’t immediately ring a bell, their work almost certainly will. The studio is behind the emulation of classic series like Fear Effect, Fighting Force, and Mortal Kombat on current hardware – titles that have found a second life through PS Plus Premium’s classic games catalog. Their proprietary Syrup engine is the technical backbone making a lot of that happen, quietly doing the heavy lifting so older games run cleanly on modern platforms.

In a statement on the acquisition, Atari CEO Wade Rosen highlighted the studio’s “enviable suite of proprietary tools” as a key draw – which makes sense, given how much of Atari’s current strategy hinges on getting retro games in front of new audiences. Implicit Conversions cofounder Robin Lavallée echoed that direction, stating the two share “a belief that accessibility is the cornerstone of preservation” and promising to bring “even more important classic titles to new audiences” under the Atari umbrella.
For fans of legacy gaming, this is a genuinely encouraging move. Atari has been quietly building one of the most serious retro revival operations in the industry – Digital Eclipse produced the outstanding Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, and Nightdive has a strong track record with remasters like Turok and Blood. Adding Implicit Conversions and the Syrup engine gives that operation real extra muscle, and it’s not unlike the kind of strategic consolidation we broke down in our analysis of the EA buyout situation. Whether this affects Implicit Conversions’ ongoing work with PlayStation is still unclear – but right now, there’s little reason to think PS Plus subscribers will notice any disruption.
