Battlefield Studios confirmed that the Top Gun Update for Battlefield 6 launches August 18, 2026, bringing a reimagined Wake Island, two new air-focused modes, and a pair of two-seat jets as part of the studio’s collaboration with Paramount Games Studio, according to the official EA community update.
Here’s the context: The update is Phase 2 of Battlefield 6’s Season 4. Season 4 opened July 21 with the Tsuru Reef map, which introduced a dynamic wave system, before moving into the Top Gun collaboration. The season’s third phase, Tidal Strike, is scheduled for September 15, according to EA’s July 17 press release announcing the Paramount Games Studio partnership. That release also confirmed that Rooster, Bob, and Warlock from Top Gun: Maverick will appear as fully voiced characters, performed by Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, and Charles Parnell, respectively.
Wake Island returns reworked around the modern sandbox, with carrier-based HQs anchoring each side and a greater emphasis on naval warfare across land, air, and sea, per the community update. Carrier Strike has both teams fighting to destroy the enemy carrier: players capture sectors, deploy vehicles, and create openings for attacks before a final objective inside the vessel. Fighter Sweep debuts in REDSEC as a Gauntlet mission in which players take down enemy jets and destroy stockpiles to build their team’s score. New hardware includes the Interdictor sniper rifle and two new two-seat jets, the F/A-81F Super Spectre and F-74A Seacat. Fort Lyndon’s Battle Royale map also gains a new point of interest called USS Grant, a crashed carrier that will offer higher-value loot than standard points of interest and be tagged as a High Value Zone for its first few weeks.
Executive Producer Ryan McArthur said EA is looking forward to players experiencing the update on August 18 and described the collaboration as one part of Battlefield 6’s biggest season yet.
Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode are also arriving through Battlefield Labs in Live with the Top Gun Update. Building on Portal, Custom Lobbies are intended to give players more control over setting up and running matches, including for private sessions, community tournaments, creator-led events, and organized play with friends and squads. Initial Spectator Mode support will cover Battle Royale Quads and Conquest, with additional modes planned as the feature expands.
The update also adds an optional ADS Dispersion Crosshair. When players fire an automatic weapon while aiming down sights, the indicator expands as dispersion increases and also reflects movement, giving a visual read on changes to weapon accuracy. It is enabled by default in the Firing Range, while players can turn it off or enable it in multiplayer through the settings. EA said the option also includes opacity and color controls.
On gunplay, EA said its initial findings showed time-to-death increasing across most weapons and ranges following the last major gunplay update, with those results remaining steady so far. The studio said it will continue monitoring data while reviewing weapon performance, identifying outliers, and exploring potential balance adjustments, including improvements for underperforming weapons.
EA also said it recently made playlist adjustments across all regions to improve matchmaking health, queue times, and match quality in the most active modes. The studio said the changes are intended to align players around modes with strong activity while retaining flexibility through Portal and Custom Search. It is reviewing feedback and data from the adjustments and plans to discuss matchmaking in more detail in a future update.
What to watch: EA said it will publish a dedicated article on Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode before the August 18 launch. That article is expected to provide more detail on how the features work and how players can begin using them. Beyond the new modes, Wake Island will be available for Verified Experiences in Portal and later in the season for Custom Experiences, while Tsuru Reef will be available for custom experiences.
The August update also continues the Portal Advanced Editor Program, which gives selected creators access to experimental tools including baked lighting and terrain editing. EA said the preliminary rollout includes Bellum1988’s Custom Operation Metro experience in the Portal SDK and that more selected creators will receive access as the program develops.
The Top Gun Update arrives August 18 as Season 4 moves from Tsuru Reef’s naval combat toward Wake Island, Carrier Strike, Fighter Sweep, new aircraft, and expanded Portal features.
