EA’s 20,000-tape vault: how Wing Commander and Road Rash came back to Steam

Electronic Arts put 25 classic PC games on Steam, GOG and the EA App on November 5. Seven of them are restored Anniversary Editions of Road Rash and six Wing Commander titles, built out of a rediscovered storage room.

The batch includes Theme Hospital and titles from the Wing Commander, Crusader and Ultima franchises. The seven restorations, EA said in its “From the Vault to Your Library” post, preserve the original look and creative intent of each game while adding quality-of-life updates for modern systems, controls and performance. Road Rash and the Wing Commander Anniversary Editions list at $9.99, with the other classics at $4.99.

A cubicle full of Betacam tapes

The project traces back to March 2022, when EA senior producer Jim Vessella discovered the company’s physical media vault at its Redwood Shores campus in California. He returned to his office to find 200 Betacam tapes waiting in his cubicle. A colleague then walked him to the vault itself, a storage room holding nearly 20,000 archival media assets, including Betacam, VHS and D1 tapes, film reels and CD-ROMs, some of it dating back to the 1980s.

“He took me over there, opened it up and it was like Indiana Jones… just, whoa,” Vessella said of the discovery.

By April 2026, EA had digitized 6,000 of those assets and preserved an estimated 2,500 hours of historical footage. The work recovered master full-motion video sequences that were thought to be lost, which editors pieced back into more than 1,500 cinematic scenes across the seven restored titles. Wing Commander III alone required about six months to isolate and clean roughly 475 full-screen cinematic scenes.

From the C&C remaster to a preservation program

Vessella’s vault hunt has a precedent. The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, released in 2020, was built from old Westwood Betacam tapes that an administrator had rescued roughly a decade earlier and stashed in a closet. After the 2022 discovery, Vessella spent about a year organizing the archive and brought a budget proposal to EA leadership, which endorsed it.

The effort became an ongoing program rather than a one-off. EA released a batch of legacy games on Steam in 2024, including Bullfrog titles and the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection, and in 2025 it open-sourced the Command & Conquer source code with Steam Workshop support. Vessella said other EA studios, including Vancouver and Tiburon, are now shipping boxes of found assets to the digitization team.

Anyone who already owned digital copies of the Wing Commander games on GOG or the EA App gets the Anniversary Edition upgrades for free on their respective platform. The Privateer 2 edition adds French, German and Spanish subtitles, and its master tapes were tracked down after community members pointed to a video by Steve Hilliker, the cinematics director on the original Privateer 2 shoot.
