Elden Ring “Shadow of the Erdtree” DLC Revealed

The critically acclaimed Elden Ring is officially getting new content. The announcement came from the official Twitter account for the game early on 28th February, and was also tweeted out by developer FromSoftware themselves. Titled Shadow of the Erdtree, the DLC expansion is “currently in development,” with no additional release details given just yet.

The announcement also comes with a teaser image, which will undoubtedly be picked apart by lore enthusiasts soon. The image shows the titular Erdtree in the background, leaking out a golden aura. The Erdtree almost looks as if it is bleeding; its haggard state suggests that the DLC may take place after the main story, given certain events in the game.

A golden field of wheat also takes up both the foreground and background of the image, suggesting that this particular view of the Erdtree is from Elden Ring’s impressively opulent Altus Plateau region. Grand, broken arches and ghostly gravestones also pop up across the vista, bringing a comfortable sense of familiarity to this new announcement. The architecture is commonly found in The Lands Between.

Of course, most striking is one of the image’s smallest details. A traveller on horseback faces the distant Erdtree, sporting a golden mane all their own. From what we currently know of major characters in Elden Ring’s lore, this is most likely the fallen demigod Miquella. Last we saw him, he was in an unresponsive cocoon form, held captive by Mohg, the Lord of Blood. Many prominent content creators in the Elden Ring community theorised that Miquella’s return would be the catalyst for any major expansion coming to the game. It would appear they were correct.

With no release date but a history of getting major expansions out within a year of their respective games’ launches, it’s probably safe to say that more details will come sooner rather than later. For some details of our own, check out our initial impressions of Elden Ring. Spoiler alert, we ended up really liking it.
