Famitsu: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Swings Into The Top 5

Every Thursday here on GL we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan.

As Famitsu took a break from their weekly posts over the holidays, this week’s chart covers the last two weeks of December (12/18-12/31). As always, you can find the full list here

The entries on the list are fairly consistent with what we’ve been seeing over the fall and winter months, with Mario Wonder continuing its dominance and topping the chart once again. The most surprising game on the list, however, is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which has soared not only into the top ten but all the way up to the fifth spot. Now, a point of clarification should be made that much of this is due to the PS5 Slim bundle that includes our friendly neighbourhood hero having a limited release in Japan on December 20th. So, if anything this is more indicative of the popularity of Sony’s console, which continues to sell well. Meanwhile Konami’s long-running strategy series, Momotaro Dentetsu, keeps steady with its latest entry taking second place, while the usual suspects of a smattering of other Switch games make up the rest of the list.

Here’s the full Famitsu software sales chart for the past couple weeks:

  1. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): 221,738 (total 1,549,401)
  2. Momotaro Dentetsu World (Switch): 192,620 (total 795,681)
  3. Pikman 4 (Switch): 78,589 (total 1,119,027)
  4. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (Switch): 77,035 (total 510,477)
  5. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (PS5): 53,238 (total 166,731)
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch): 46,452 (total 5,631,598)
  7. Minecraft (Switch): 38,472 (total 3,394,222)
  8. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch): 38,005 (5,400,275)
  9. WarioWare: Move It! (Switch): 39,147 (total 141,554)
  10. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet (Switch): 35,679 (total 5,246,363)

Additionally, the list for hardware sales is as follows (console families are grouped together for simplicity):

NSW: 168,866

PS5: 81,943

XBS: 1,159

PS4: 1,119

3DS: 34

It’s clear that both the PS5 and Switch were popular purchases over the holidays as both consoles saw a sizeable jump in sales compared to the weeks prior. The same unfortunately cannot be said for the Xbox Series X|S, which saw a negligible (if not decreased) number of consoles sold compared to the summer and fall of last year.
