FromSoftware chief Hidetaka Miyazaki says the studio has not decided to move in a more multiplayer-focused direction, despite having two multiplayer titles on the way: Elden Ring Nightreign and the newly announced The Duskbloods. In a Nintendo Creators’ Voice interview, Miyazaki said FromSoftware still intends to actively develop single-player-focused games in its more traditional style, as reported by GamePro.
The Duskbloods was announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and is an online multiplayer game at its core. The game supports up to eight players in a PvPvE format, making it distinct from FromSoftware’s other announced multiplayer project, Elden Ring Nightreign.
The announcements prompted questions about whether the developer of single-player-focused games including Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series might be changing its overall direction. Miyazaki addressed that concern in the Nintendo interview, explaining that The Duskbloods’ multiplayer structure should not be read as a decision to make future FromSoftware games more multiplayer-focused.
He pointed to the announced Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring as an example of the kind of single-player-focused game FromSoftware still plans to develop. The Switch 2 release, called the Tarnished Edition, includes the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and new equipment; the new equipment is also planned for other platforms.
The Duskbloods does represent an opportunity for the team to explore a different format. Miyazaki said he had wanted to make a PvPvE game and that the structure lets the team draw on its experience designing challenging enemy encounters while using a wider range of game-design ideas.
In the interview excerpt, Miyazaki cited the Switch 2 version of Elden Ring as an example of the single-player-focused games FromSoftware still plans to develop. His comments establish the studio’s stated intent to continue making single-player-focused games, while The Duskbloods and Elden Ring Nightreign show FromSoftware is also pursuing multiplayer projects.
The Duskbloods and Nightreign will offer different multiplayer experiences, while Miyazaki’s comments indicate that FromSoftware’s single-player-focused work remains part of the company’s plans.
