Indie Games To Watch This Month: September 2025

Let’s get this out of the way. Hollow Knight Silksong is finally dropping this September after seven years of development. Not to mention Borderlands 4, and Silent Hill f, and the return of EA’s Skate. But you know about these games! There also happen to be a whole host of worthwhile indie games you likely have never heard of coming this September, and to give them a little spotlight we’ve collected a few below. Who knows, you might even find a hidden gem in here!

Star Birds

Star Birds is an unbelievably cute automation management game coming to you direct from the developers of the stone-cold classic cozy strategy game Dorfromantik. Traverse the universe with your bird explorers, find new worlds, and harvest the minerals you find in an ever-expanding strategy game until you conquer the galaxy. Any management and strategy fans should keep a very close eye on Star Birds as it develops. It’ll be launching in Early Access on Steam and has an extensive demo you can play right now!

NetherWorld

netherworld

NetherWorld is a 2D action game that promises to be wholly and completely unique. This narrative-heavy mind-freak experience follows a disgraced jellyfish who goes on a bender after his wife leaves him, leading him to discover strange worlds, weird creatures, drugs, sex, booze, and a whole lot of mini-games. If you’re looking for something extremely different than the usual, regardless of its quality, NetherWorld is certainly going to provide.

Town to City

Town to city

From the creators of Station to Station comes a delightfully cozy city-builder, Town to City. If you, like me, have a great love of all miniature worlds and are enraptured by the massively complicated model train sets seen on r/modeltrains , you’re going to want to download Town to City for its Early Access release on September 16. A very fun and promising demo that effortlessly impressed me is available as well, so you can get started this instant on building out a little voxel town and growing into the city it was always meant to be.

Arctic Awakening

Arctic Awakening is a survival game for those who are looking for something a little more casual. The player will find themselves crashed in the arctic, accompanied by a court-mandated therapy bot for company as they search for their co-pilot across the tundra. This narrative-heavy adventure promises to blend the line between survival and walking simulator, so those looking for an engaging story without too much mechanical depth should take a look at the demo that’s available now.

No I’m Not a Human

If NetherWorld didn’t look weird enough for you, saying that No I’m Not a Human has you covered is an understatement. In this bizarre blend of Home Safety Hotline meets Papers Please, the sun has scorched the earth and driven all humans inside if they don’t wish to literally melt. And on top of that, a race of creatures called The Visitors have arrived, looking for permission to enter our homes, looking and sounding perfectly human. Perish at the heat death of the universe completely alone, or risk letting in one of … them. The choice is yours. There’s a demo on Steam right now I strongly encourage you to play.

No I’m Not a Human is also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox on September 15, but does not currently have pages up on those stores.

If you’re not really about Metroidvanias or looter shooters, perhaps give one of these indie games a chance to become one of your favorites of the year. And even if you’re busy sweating through bosses in Silksong, perhaps a break with something a little different is just what you need in between getting your butt kicked. Did we miss any indie games you’re looking forward to this month? Let us know in the comments!
