Jim Carrey to Star as Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

Looks like Sega’s blue hero is finally going to get his own live-action film, possibly starring Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman, aka Dr. Robotnik. Carrey is renowned for his roles in the Ace Ventura movies, and he has apparently been negotiating with Paramount Pictures for the role of Sonic’s arch nemesis Robotnik in the upcoming live-action Sonic movie.

According to Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr, the movie is to be directed by Jeff Fowler, who also directed animated movie Gopher Broke. Production is to be headed by Neal Moritz, Mie Onishi and Tim Miller, with the script written by Pat Casey & Josh Miller. Stars James Marsden, known for the hit series Westworld, and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) have been confirmed but their roles have yet to be declared.

The movie is set to be released in 2019 with no specific date announced. For those of you who are not familiar with Sonic, he is the hero of Sega’s classic and world-renowned series Sonic the Hedgehog, which first debuted for Sega Genesis in 1991.
