Robert Downey Jr. Stars In New Black Ops 2 Teaser

Robert Downey Jr. trades in his Iron Man suit for some fighter pilot threads in Activision’s new Black Ops 2 spot entitled “Surprise.” Director of the commercial is Guy Ritchie, who directs Downey in the Sherlock Holmes movies. Via The Hollywood Reporter:

Tim Ellis, chief marketing officer at Activision, said director Ritchie brings a strong emotion and raw energy to the Call of Duty ad.
“The visceral nature of his work and distinctiveness of style that he’s shown in the Sherlock Holmes movies and even Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a perfect match of how we look to build brand equity for Call of Duty,” said Ellis.

In the spot, which features a series of surprise guest appearances in the midst of futuristic warfare circa 2025, Downey Jr. quips, “Guess who brought a jet to a gun fight.”

Ellis said Activision had its sights set on Downey Jr. even before Ritchie signed on to direct, but securing the actor’s long-time friend and collaborator helped the entire process move faster.

Other Hollywood talent enlisted by developer Treyarch for the Black Ops 2 project include Academy Award winning musician Trent Reznor, Sam Worthington, Tony Todd, Michael Rooker, James C. Burns, and Kamar de los Reyes.

Seeing as half of the game’s profit come from outside the United States, “Surprise” is also running during “high profile” soccer games in Europe and features French actor Omar Sy from the film The Intouchables as well as other Internet stars.

Black Ops 2 will be available world-wide on November 13 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
