Xbox sells cloud playtime by the hour, no Game Pass required

Xbox Insiders can now buy cloud streaming time without a Game Pass subscription, in prepaid packs of 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99 and 50 hours for $11.99, the company announced on Xbox Wire on October 21.

The announcement describes the figures as introductory launch pricing, which means they can move again once the option leaves preview. “Cloud playtime packs provide an ad-free cloud gaming experience, including shorter wait times, high-quality streaming, and playtime that remains available until it’s used,” Team Xbox said in the post.

What $3.99 actually buys

Purchased playtime carries no monthly deadline, so an hours pack can sit until a player burns through it. What it does not buy is the games: Xbox says users still need to own an eligible cloud-playable title or play a supported free-to-play game on a supported device. Availability, purchasing options and eligible games vary by market, device, account eligibility and preview ring, so not every Insider will see the packs.

Insiders can also stream without paying anything, in free ad-supported sessions limited to owned games and capped at one hour, an option Xbox began testing earlier this year. Players who want a library with their streaming can still compare against the Game Pass catalogue, which recently added GTA V and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

What changes for subscribers in November

Two more things land in November. The playtime packs roll out beyond the Insider preview, with no exact date given yet. And Game Pass cloud streaming, which is currently unlimited for subscribers, switches to monthly hour caps of 15 on Ultimate, 10 on Premium and 5 on Essential. Microsoft says the caps affect about 4 percent of Game Pass subscribers.

For heavy streamers the packs become the top-up: at the 50-hour tier the rate works out to roughly $0.40 an hour. Nvidia’s GeForce Now, by comparison, sells up to 100 hours of premium monthly playtime for $10 a month on top of a player’s own game library, while Game Pass Ultimate costs $23 a month and includes the catalog.
