Yesterday saw the release of a new Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, and featured some jaw-dropping scenes of the virtual Leonida and the areas and characters within it. We were impressed in our initial coverage, but now we’re even moreso, as Rockstar Games has confirmed that the trailer was captured entirely on a standard PlayStation 5 console. Despite having the PS5 Pro at their disposal, Rockstar opted to showcase the quality of their game on a standard unit, and that alone was mesmerising.
Rockstar also confirmed that these weren’t just in-game cinematics, the trailer in fact contained equal parts cutscenes and actual gameplay. Yes, those astonishing visuals won’t just transition into a somewhat less impressive picture once we’re playing the game; those were actually gameplay action shots. In an industry where CGI cinematic trailers are the standard for early showcases of games, it’s great that Rockstar opted to give us a realistic look at Grand Theft Auto VI, despite still being a year away.

It’s been a slow, sometimes excruciating ride in the 12 year wait for the latest in the GTA franchise. Publisher Take-Two did make clear earlier in the year that they will only be showing more from Grand Theft Auto when they felt they were in a position to start building a proportionate amount of hype to the end product that they’ve created. Such an early showcase of Grand Theft Auto VI, especially running on a standard console, is an incredible display of confidence. Now we just need to keep waiting until late next May to try it out for ourselves.
