Announced earlier this year to the delight of fans, upcoming puzzle-mystery title Professor Layton and the New World of Steam still lacks an official release date. However, a new trailer revealed tons of tantalizing details about Level-5’s triumphant return to the world of Hershel Layton, the world’s foremost puzzle-solving detective, and the adventures he will encounter as he travels to the titular New World of Steam.
Set one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, New World of Steam begins when Layton’s apprentice Luke Triton sends a letter to his mentor, requesting Layton’s aid with a mystery. Layton travels to the American city of Steam Bison, where rapidly-advancing steam technology has led to the creation of mechanical horses and carriages, flying machines, and many more wonders.
This time, it’s Layton who is the the unknown element – he’s coming to the town for the first time, while Luke has already established a reputation as a Master Detective in Steam Bison. Together once again, this dynamic duo will solve plenty of puzzles to get to the bottom of the mysterious goings-on! This time, solving puzzles will be necessary for more than just gathering clues. New World of Steam will include a mechanic in which players can solve puzzles to improve and expand the city and its facilities.
Yo Oizumi will return as the voice of Hershel Layton, while Mio Imada steps into the role of Luke Triton. It has not been confirmed whether any other characters from the series are returning, although many fans hope to see Katrielle, Layton’s adopted daughter, make an appearance. In addition, the puzzles in New World of Steam will be designed by experienced puzzle developer QuizKnock. Few other details were revealed, although the trailer did end on an ominous note with the sound of gunshots and breaking glass. Layton fans will certainly have plenty to speculate about until the game releases!
