Metal Gear Solid 4’s Big Boss Emblem Returns on PS5

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is coming to PS5 as part of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2. Its Trophy list is mostly the same as the PS3 version, which means players pursuing the Platinum will need to earn the Big Boss emblem again, according to Push Square.

Metal Gear Solid Trophy lists are known for demanding multiple playthroughs, and the series’ emblem system is a major part of that challenge. The system awards titles based on the type of playthrough completed. In Guns of the Patriots, the Big Boss emblem is the game’s hardest emblem.

What the Big Boss emblem requires

To earn the PS5 Platinum in Metal Gear Solid 4, players must unlock every other Trophy. That includes completing a playthrough that meets the Big Boss emblem conditions listed by PSNProfiles:

  • Difficulty: Complete the game on Boss Extreme, the hardest difficulty.
  • No deaths: Finish without dying.
  • No alerts: Do not trigger alerts.
  • No kills: Finish without killing enemies.
  • No recovery items: Do not use recovery items.
  • No stealth suit: Do not use the stealth suit.
  • No bandana: Do not use the bandana.
  • Time limit: Complete the playthrough in under five hours.

Those requirements combine the hardest difficulty with restrictions on deaths, alerts, kills, equipment and recovery items, all within a five-hour limit. The Big Boss emblem is therefore central to the game’s Platinum challenge.

PSNProfiles gives the overall Metal Gear Solid 4 Platinum an 8 out of 10 difficulty rating and recommends spreading its challenges across eight playthroughs. The recommendation reflects the broader demands of the Trophy list as well as the conditions attached to the Big Boss emblem.

Peace Walker has a different route to Platinum

Master Collection Vol. 2 also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Because of its structure, Peace Walker can theoretically be Platinumed in one playthrough, but PSNProfiles estimates 70 hours of playtime to unlock everything. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker may therefore demand different approaches, even though both are included in the same collection.

Both ported games have one shared addition to their Trophy lists: players must read every page of their screenplays. The screenplays are included as bonuses in Master Collection Vol. 2.

For players targeting the Metal Gear Solid 4 Platinum on PS5, the key requirement remains clear: the Big Boss emblem calls for a Boss Extreme playthrough with no deaths, no alerts, no kills, no recovery items, no stealth suit, no bandana and a completion time below five hours.
