When it comes to gaming, things are always incredibly volatile. Gamers can go from absolutely loving a game to dropping it entirely when a scandal takes place, and that seems to have been the case with Helldivers 2 which has recently received a large amount of backlash. The cause of this backlash was due to Steam players having to link a PlayStation Network account if they wish to continue playing the game.
We first learned of this after the official Steam page of the game released a statement which confirmed that new players of Helldivers 2 will have to link their Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account if they wanted to continue playing on on May 6. This statement caused a large outcry amongst Helldivers 2 players, with many of them taking to social media to share their grievances. Many longtime players were threatening to quit the game and demand refunds as well. This has also led to Helldivers 2 being review bombed on Steam.

Due to the huge outcry from fans, the CEO of Arrowhead Studios has apologized via a tweet in which he writes “sorry everyone for how this all transpired. I hope we will make it up and regain the trust by providing a continued great game experience. I just want to make great games!”. It should be noted that angry players have been directed to share their displeasure with PlayStation Support instead of the Helldivers 2 devs themselves.
Gamers have made their voices heard across social media, and now with the Arrowhead CEO responding it’s clear the message was loud enough to make an impact. It’s yet to be made clear whether the outcry has affected the plan to integrate PSN into the game, but only time will tell.
