Capcom Will Count Nintendo Switch 2 Game Key Card Purchases As Digital Sales

Capcom just released their Q&A from their latest round of investor relations discussions following their quarterly report. Putting aside all the boring corporate talk, an interesting nugget of information can be found in the question asking Capcom if they’ll be counting Game Key Card sales for Nintendo Switch 2 as physical or digital units – and Capcom is firmly recording them as digital sales.

Most of the submitted questions have more meat in their answers, but Capcom simply say “they [Switch 2 Game Key Cards] are recorded as digital sales.” It’s a logical conclusion, but one that gamers may not expect on first impression of the boxes. Game Key Cards still contain cartridges in a box, but the cartridge only serves as an activator for the entire game to be downloaded to the system, such as with Capcom’s Street Fighter 6.

The sale of physical Game Key Card products will be considered a digital purchase by Capcom.

The consideration of Switch 2’s Game Key Cards as digital copies will inherently inflate the ratio of digital to physical sales in future for Capcom, as all Switch 2 releases with Game Key Cards can only count as digital, both the physical Game Key Card and the direct eShop purchase. Even if players wanted to show their support for at least a theoretically physical release with the Game Key Cards, going forwards the percentage of Capcom’s digital sales are going to appear a lot higher, especially if they keep producing Game Key Cards for their releases.

Are you a fan of the Game Key Cards on Nintendo Switch 2? Do you think Capcom is right to consider their sale as a digital purchase, or should they still be recorded as a physical one?
