MachineGames and id Software have officially released Dawn of the Machine, a free 19-map campaign episode celebrating the 30th anniversary of landmark shooter Quake across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, as reported by PlayStation Blog.
Here’s the context: The surprise launch arrives during QuakeCon 2026, celebrating three decades since the original 1996 debut that pioneered first-person shooters in the third dimension. Unlike previous studio collaborations like Dimension of the Machine and Call of the Machine, which relied on hub-based progression, this episode features a continuous campaign structure, as highlighted in Engadget reporting.
Developed primarily by an internal side initiative at MachineGames known as Quake Club, the campaign traps protagonist Ranger within an illusory time-loop dimension. The content update is available at no additional charge for existing digital owners and active subscribers on Xbox Game Pass.
This internal development approach gives team members an opportunity to work collaboratively on a smaller project outside their standard AAA production roles. By using Quake as a creative outlet, MachineGames can support skill sharing and experimentation across the studio.
Shifting to a continuous 19-map progression flow gives the episode a cohesive narrative and progression structure. Adding official content to a 30-year-old game also reflects the continuing influence of id Software’s fundamental combat design.
What’s included in the expansion:
- New Story Campaign – A continuous 19-map episode where Ranger navigates time loops to destroy The Nightmare Machine.
- New Weapon Variants – Upgraded tactical tools including the projectile-ricocheting Laser Cannon and a lightning-charged Super Axe.
- Reimagined Bestiary – Dangerous variants of classic monsters, including the Rocket Ogre, Blood Shambler, and Demo Dog.
- Original Soundtrack – Dark ambient atmospheric tracks composed by MachineGames level designer Christian Plogfors.
- Multiplayer & Achievements – An original Deathmatch arena map along with three new Xbox achievements worth 600 gamerscore.
MachineGames Lead Level Designer Andrew Yoder said the continuous campaign design required more coordination and iteration than the studios’ previous hub-based expansions.
What to watch: QuakeCon 2026 includes a panel discussion about the new episode featuring current and former franchise leaders, including id Software co-founder John Romero. The event also marks the 30th anniversary of QuakeCon.
