Famitsu: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Becomes Best-Selling Physical Game Ever

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Dec. 16 – 22, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons physical sales cross 8 million units in its native Japan – officially becoming the best-selling physical game of all time in the country.

The previous record holder was Pokémon Red and Green, which sold 7.93 million copies between the two versions. Animal Crossing: New Horizons surpasses those games with only a single version, and pushes the new number to beat beyond 8 million.

The Switch sales explosion in the run-up to the holiday period also hit Super Mario Party Jamboree, which spends another week on top, and securing its biggest post-launch week sales with 133,000 units sold during its tenth week on sale! It’s been a happy holiday overall for Nintendo, as the Switch sold over 100,000 more consoles and dominates the entire top ten games chart.
