Famitsu: Bayonetta 3 Debuts #2, PS5 Outsells Switch

Every Thursday we cover the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week we have the Oct. 24 – Oct. 30 chart, and once again Splatoon 3 takes the top spot for its eighth week in a row with 52,000 units sold. The newly released Bayonetta 3 couldn’t take the crown from Splatoon, but it did get second place, selling 41,000 copies.

The sales figures for Bayonetta 3 are slightly better than its predecessor Bayonetta 2, which debuted with 33,000 sales with its 2014 Wii U release, and a lot better than the 2018 Nintendo Switch release with 21,000 sales (including Non-Stop Climax Edition). There’s also no word yet on digital sales, with the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers being a popular way to purchase games from the eShop at a cheaper price in Japan.

Splatoon 3 is spending its eighth week at #1, after shooting to the top spot since its September release.

The chart is filled with other new entries this week too. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has a slight rise in sales at 42,000 (combined platforms) compared to last year’s series entry Vanguard with 41,000 units sold. Sales are far below the 2019 Modern Warfare which pushed 118,000 units at the time of launch, but it seems Modern Warfare 2 is having much more success, and breaking records, digitally.

The debut of Star Ocean: The Divine Force and Modern Warfare 2 on PlayStation systems, and perhaps better stock availability, have managed to push the PS5 narrowly ahead of the Switch this week. Combining models, the PS5 sold 38,866 consoles, whilst the Switch sold 38,634. There is some speculation that Switch units are being stored up in anticipation for Pokémon later in the month. With a big Sony title coming up in God of War Ragnarök, and the probably huge release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, we’ll see how the consoles compete in the coming weeks.
