Every Thursday here on GL we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan.
This week’s chart covers 02/26-03/03. As always, you can find the full list here.
To no one’s surprise, the newly released and much anticipated sequel to one of 2020’s best-selling titles, Final Fantasy VII Remake, takes this week’s top spot. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sold a solid 262,656 physical units in just its first few days on the market. Though some reports suggest this may be a few pegs less than what Remake raked in at the same point after its release, it’s still a very impressive number and a fair bit higher than the numbers we’ve seen many other titles pull in on their first week of release. I have no doubt that Cloud and friends will sit comfortably at the top spot for weeks to come, but what I’d be more curious to see is if their continued success translates to hardware sales for Sony’s now four year old PlayStation 5.
The remainder of the list keeps steady with titles we’ve been seeing on a consistent basis; from Super Mario Bros. Wonder still in the top five, Mario Vs Donkey Kong only slipping to second place, and Konami’s Momotaro Dentetsu World continuing to sell steadily to keep it at number four. Bushiroad’s Goblin Slayer Another Adventure: Nightmare Feast and Idea Factory’s Matsurika no Kei: Tenmeiin Iden are a couple new third party releases of note that made it onto this week’s list at the seventh and ninth spots, respectively.
Here’s the full Famitsu software sales chart for this week:
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5): 262,656 (NEW)
- Mario Vs Donkey Kong (Switch): 14,480 (total 103,525)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): 11,643 (total 1,767,792)
- Momotaro Dentetsu World: The Earth Spins with Hope! (Switch): 9708 (total 998,957)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch): 9251 (total 5,728,200)
- Shin-chan: Shiro of Coal Town (Switch): 7352 (total 28,945)
- Goblin Slayer Another Adventure (Switch): 6822 (NEW)
- Splatoon 3 (Switch): 5613 (total 4,239,708)
- Matsurika no Kei: Tenmeiin Iden (Switch): 5537 (NEW)
- Minecraft (Switch): 5468 (total 3,458,115)
Additionally, the list for hardware sales is as follows (console families are grouped together for simplicity):
NSW: 62,531
PS5: 48,067
XBS: 2,351
PS4: 1,722
3DS: 13
Interesting to see the Switch have a jump in sales to cross the 60k mark this week, seeing as the PS5 arguably had the biggest release in Rebirth. Though we are seeing a slight uptick in PS5 sales this week, it’s only a few thousand more than the week prior, and considerably less than what the console sold this time last year. Meanwhile the Series X|S continues its struggles out in Japan, barely hitting the 3k mark week upon week. It’ll be interesting to see how Microsoft’s consoles fair in the coming months as the company charges ahead into its “play anywhere” business model.
