Famitsu: Newly Released “Dragon Quest” Takes Weekly Top Spot

Every Thursday here on GL we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan.

This week’s chart covers 11/27-12/03. As always, you can find the full list here

This week sees Square Enix’s newly released Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince take the top spot with nearly 350,000 units sold. The Dark Prince is set prior to the events of Dragon Quest IV, and has players take control of a young Psaro before he would become the villain we’d come to know. 350k units sold is quite the feat, outpacing even some of Nintendo’s recent hits like Super Mario RPG, which only just surpassed the 300k mark at launch. It’s not entirely surprising given the popularity of the Dragon Quest IP in Japan, but seeing as this is not a mainline entry and yet pulling in these types of numbers is quite impressive.

Beyond that, the remainder of the list remains unchanged from last week in terms of the titles that comprise it. Nintendo hits like Super Mario RPG, Mario Wonder, & Pikmin 4 remain strong as steady sales continue to flow. Unfortunately, Sony’s Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name has been overtaken this week, replaced by another Nintendo staple, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is surprisingly still selling strong even after all these years.

Here’s the full Famitsu software sales chart for this week:

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (Switch): 346,583 (NEW)

Momotaro Electric Railway World (Switch): 64,946 (total 477,956)

Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): 61,794 (total 1,150,511)

Super Mario RPG (Switch): 24,099 (total 379,754)

Pikman 4 (Switch): 13,366 (total 978,683)

WarioWare: Move It! (Switch): 9,597 (total 74,279)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch): 8,464 (total 5,556,552)

Minecraft (Switch): 7925 (total 3,325,906)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch): 7224 (total 7,591,150)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch): 7106 (total 5,336,148

Additionally, the list for hardware sales is as follows (console families are grouped together for simplicity):

NSW: 79,855

PS5: 43,946

XBS: 2,190

PS4: 853

3DS: 15

Looks like sales across all platforms saw a marginal dip this week, except for the Switch, which saw a slight increase from last week’s 71k units sold.
