Famitsu Sales: Nintendo Switch 2 Is Japan’s Fastest Selling Console Ever

Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers June 2 – 8, as the long-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 finally hit the market in an explosive debut week. As many anticipated, the Switch 2 has obliterated the record for fastest selling console in Japan previously held by the PlayStation 2’s launch week, as the Switch 2 sold over 940,000 consoles in its first few days on sale.

This astronomical launch of the Switch 2 completely eclipses the launch of all other past consoles, such as the original Nintendo Switch with its 330,000 units sold in the first week, or the PS2 with its reported 630,000 launch sales from Media Creates. As such, the accompanying launch of Mario Kart World is also a record-breaking one, with 782,000 copies sold making it the fastest selling game in the Mario Kart franchise, overtaking the former record holder of Mario Kart Wii which shipped almost 595,000 units in its first week. The launch of the Switch 2 has been nothing short of astronomical.
