Famitsu: Skull and Bones Can’t Break 10k Upon Release As Mario Vs Donkey Kong Smashes Into No. 1

Every Thursday here on GL we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan.

This week’s chart covers 2/12-2/18. As always, you can find the full list here

This week saw the release of Nintendo’s puzzle platformer, Mario vs Donkey Kong. Though it’s thus far received modestly positive reviews rather than stellar ones, that hasn’t kept it from climbing all the way to the week’s top spot. Famitsu themselves gave the game a 32/40, which on their scale is more-or-less on par with critics around the globe. These relatively milquetoast scores were enough to get more than 60K people to buy the physical edition of the game. Seeing as how well Nintendo games keep up in sales as the weeks go on, we’ll likely be seeing this duo on this list for the foreseeable future.

Speaking of Nintendo’s consistency in sales, the remainder of the list sees many of the Japanese company’s usual suspects. From Super Mario Bros. Wonder keeping pace at the second spot, to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons making appearances in the fourth and eighth spots, respectively. Beyond that, Nihon Falcom’s popular franchise, The Legend of Heroes, saw its latest entry, Trails Through Daybreak, make its way over to the Switch this week. Though a port of a 2021 game, it sold well enough to make it into this week’s sixth spot; another indicator for the attachment power of the Switch. Lastly, though at no.1 very recently, Atlus’ Persona 3 Reload saw a 45% dip in physical sales, making its PS5 version the only one to squeak in at this week’s tenth spot.
