In what is sure to be remembered as a historic leak in the gaming industry, Grand Theft Auto VI has allegedly been leaked online. The leak includes approximately ninety gameplay videos, as well as thousands of lines of source code. GTA 6 has been an anticipated release after the record-breaking success of GTA 5 almost a decade ago.
Due to both legal reasons and respect for the developers, we will not be posting any footage from the leaks. Whilst it’s always important to take an alleged leak with a grain of salt, industry insider Jason Schreier has confirmed with Rockstar sources that these leaks are real. The footage is very early from an unfinished game, so it’s naturally rough in parts. The game’s state seems to be playable, but lacks the polish that would come in later parts of development.
The alleged leak videos showcase a lot of classic GTA features, as well as some new ones. Combat, open-world exploration, shops, weapons and playable characters are all shown, which also reveal some plot details. It appears the earlier rumors of the first female protagonist in the series’ history may be true, being joined by a male protagonist as a playable duo. This carries on the trend set by GTA 5 which had three playable characters, after earlier entries had one.
There has been no comment from Rockstar officially on the legitimacy of these leaks, but their impact could be severe. It would surely be disheartening for many Rockstar employees to see their unfinished work being scrutinised across social media. This could also take some of the wind out of the sails of GTA 6 marketing hype, with surprises being leaked potentially months before any intended reveals.
