We’ve finally got a confirmed release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and the hype has never been higher for the long-anticipated Metroidvania. As part of the excitement for the sequel, the original Hollow Knight just destroyed its all-time Steam player count record with a skyrocketing concurrent player count. At the time of writing, there are over 45,000 people simultaneously playing Hollow Knight on Steam, which is more than double its former peak of 20,000 concurrent Steam players in May 2022.
The soaring player count is coinciding with some very influential and popular content creators trying out the game for the first time ahead of the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. To name just two, both Alpharad and Maximilian Dood spent yesterday playing Hollow Knight for the first time on livestreams to their combined audience of millions. With both creators and gamers trying to get caught up on Hollow Knight before the guaranteed massive success of Silksong, and with the long time it can take players to get lost in the kingdom, we expect this Steam number to potentially grow further.

The original Hollow Knight has been an incredible success for developer and publisher Team Cherry ever since its initial release back in 2017. As of this month, Hollow Knight has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful indie games ever created. The fanbase that has developed around the game in recent years has generated intense excitement across the gaming community for its sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is set to release next week on September 4. If you missed out on the original game then there’s never been a better time to give it a try, and there will also be more people than ever before playing with you!
