Lara Croft is making her return to mobile gaming in Tomb Raider Reloaded. The free single player game is expected to come to iOS and Android app stores in 2021.
Square Enix has teamed up with Emerald City Games to develop Tomb Raider Reloaded, but if you were expecting anything similar to the traditional Tomb Raider gameplay, you may want to rethink that. Although the trailer gave little away, Square Enix has described the game as a "free to play action arcade game.” This means we can probably expect something more in tune with the spin-off Tomb Raider games such as Tomb Raider: The Prophecy, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, or Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
Square Enix released the teaser trailer on November 23 and as mentioned, gave very little away. However, it is easy to see where the developers are nodding towards the original games through panning shots of overgrown jungle ruins, tempting treasure, looming beasties, and impending peril. One thing that immediately stuck out is that the developers have chosen to return to Lara Croft’s classic shorts, vest, and combat boots look, which is a nice homage to the original games. Interestingly, they have also opted for a ‘cutesier’ cartoon design look compared to the traditional gritty appearance.
The teaser trailer was released to a mixed reception, to say the least. Currently there is a 1.5k to 2k like to dislike ratio. Judging by the reception, a lot of fans were hoping for a traditional Tomb Raider game to celebrate 25 years of the franchise.
One of the top comments by user nerdymovies read: “As someone who's been screaming "ressurect Classic Lara and turn it into a spin-off series!" for over ten year now, this is absolutely not what I meant by that.”
It will be interesting to see what the gameplay will be like, if there is a storyline, and whether it can win over the uncertain fanbase.
