Arc System Works has confirmed that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is entering the “final stages of development” – a milestone that puts the PS5 and PC fighter firmly on course for its August 6 launch, now just three months out. Following the game’s appearance at EVO Japan, the developer’s confirmation signals that the heavy lifting is done and the team is likely deep into balance passes and final polish rather than building new systems from scratch.
Fourteen characters have been revealed so far, with six more still to be announced before launch. The most recent additions – The Incredible Hulk and Shuri’s Black Panther – complete the Avengers-side squad alongside the previously confirmed Captain America and Iron Man, as covered in our earlier Marvel Tokon roster breakdown. A new build featuring Black Panther and the Wakanda stage is also set to be playable at Combo Breaker in Chicago, giving the fighting game community its freshest hands-on opportunity yet.
Those six remaining character slots are where things get genuinely interesting. A tease at the end of the latest trailer has fans convinced Carnage is incoming, with Doctor Doom widely expected to join him as part of a villains-style squad – a structural mirror to the Avengers grouping already confirmed. If that reads correctly, the final reveals could be some of the most impactful of the entire pre-launch campaign.

Sony has been bringing updated builds to fighting game tournaments worldwide throughout the game’s development cycle, which is a genuinely smart way to build grassroots hype in a competitive scene that can make or break a new fighter’s longevity. Marvel Tokon‘s 4v4 tag team format puts it in conversation with the legacy of Marvel vs. Capcom – and with Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 both continuing to push the genre forward with strong DLC slates, Arc System Works needs this one to land clean. Their pedigree – Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Strive – suggests it will.
The community is clearly deep in theorycrafting mode right now, with the villain squad speculation dominating discussion across fighting game forums and social channels. Six characters left, and the biggest reveals are almost certainly still hiding behind that roster slot countdown. Watch for further announcements as Combo Breaker approaches and the August window draws closer.
Which of the six unrevealed characters are you most hoping makes the cut – and is Carnage the villain pick you want, or is there someone else you’d rather see anchor that squad?
