Sony’s PS5 Showcase certainly got some of its big hitters out of the way as soon as it could; first showing a trailer for a new Final Fantasy, then following up with more information and a gameplay demo for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a sequel to 2018’s PS4 Exclusive Spider-Man game.
The demo, taking place one year after the events of Spider-Man, shows off both a civilian section, with Miles walking through a pop-up street fair with best friend Ganke on his way to attend a rally for his mother’s political campaign. The next section shows the younger Spider-Man’s first encounter with the evil energy corporation, Roxxon, and a supervillain known as ‘the Tinkerer’ as she attempts to steal an experimental energy source one of Roxxon’s armored delivery trucks on one of Manhattan’s many bridges.
The demo showed off Miles’ combat capabilities, and not just his web-slinging and acrobatic abilities reminiscent of Peter’s arsenal in the previous game. Miles also has unique bioelectric powers, shocking enemies, tethering them together, and turning invisible to lose pursuers and surprise them for stealth takedowns.
The demo ends with the damaged bridge collapsing, and Miles swinging around to rescue trapped civilians from the collapsing bridge, using his spider-sense and web-slinging to avoid dangers and create paths to lead the citizens of New York to safety.
The trailer showed no sign of Peter Parker — it is Mile’s game after all — but it does leave the question hanging of what role Mile’s mentor will play in the sequel and how he will help the new hero take down the Tinkerer.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is also coming to both the PS5 and PS4 this holiday season. Are you ready to be a hero?
