Microsoft thought about acquiring Nintendo while planning the first Xbox

It has come to my attention that this is old news but for the following I have only just found it out so I thought I would share it for those who didn’t know. When Microsoft started making the Xbox they considered a number of ideas before they first launched the console in 2001, one of the things Microsoft considered when it came to the first Xbox was the acquisition of Nintendo, this is apparently based on a new report from GameIndustry.

GamesIndustry spoke with Seamus Blackley, the co-creator of Xbox, “who helped draft the Xbox proposal and assemble the design team.” A portion of the site’s article states:

Blackley noted that a number of other ideas were pushed around at Microsoft too. Some people said Xbox should be focused on playing movies, or that all the games would have to be made by Microsoft. Some even pushed the notion that Microsoft should make a huge play and just gobble up Nintendo. “Just name it, name a bad idea and it was something we had to deal with,” Blackley lamented.

Lets all just be glad that Nintendo and Microsoft didn’t let the industry die by Nintendo going to Microsoft, could you imagine Zelda, Mario or Pokemon on an Xbox, it is such a scary thought, might I say a very scary thought. Now I think about it I am going to go curl up in the corner with the scary thought in my head.
