It has only been ten days since the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the game has already crossed $1 billion in worldwide sell-through. This is the fastest the series has ever hit this milestone, with the former record holder Black Ops 2 taking 15 days to hit $1 billion sales.
There’s not only a lot of money going into Modern Warfare 2, but a lot of time too. Player engagement figures included in today’s sales press release reveal there has been over a billion matches played across platforms, which is more than 200 million hours of playtime. This is a mind-blowing figure, the combined total amount of time played by gamers on Modern Warfare 2 is more than 548,000 years. All this, and the game has only been out for ten days.
These staggering numbers are just the latest in records that Modern Warfare 2 has broken. The game had the highest grossing opening of any entertainment product or piece of media in 2022, outperforming some of the year’s biggest blockbuster movies’ box office combined. Modern Warfare 2 also had the biggest digital PlayStation Store launch in Call of Duty franchise history, with more than 70% of UK boxed sales being on the PlayStation series of consoles too.
There’s seemingly no end to the success of Call of Duty. The series is one of the biggest in gaming history, and it’s not slowing down any time soon with the immense success of the rebooted sequel game Modern Warfare 2. The game is expected to stay hot for a while with the upcoming release of Warzone 2.0 next week, a free-to-play battle royale game that is part of Modern Warfare 2, but downloadable for free separately.
