The sixteen original launch maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) will make a comeback in this year’s Modern Warfare III, as confirmed by Activision in a Call of Duty blog post. The maps have been “modernized both graphically and with meticulous attention” to give players, longstanding and newbies alike, the opportunity to indulge in nostalgia or expand their horizons and discover how it used to be.
“Veteran players love these Core 6v6 maps, and there’s no better time to introduce a generation of new players to experience the community’s favorite Modern Warfare content,” the blog post reads. The revival of the sixteen launch maps will incorporate “the latest tech, gameplay, modes, content, and more” while retaining the authenticity of the originals. The maps have been rebuilt from the ground up, courtesy of the original 2009 designs.
The sixteen maps are as follows: Afghan. Derail. Estate. Favela. Karachi. Highrise. Invasion. Quarry. Rundown. Rust. Scrapyard. Skidrow. Sub Base. Terminal. Underpass. Wasteland. The classic maps will contain additional features “that were never part of the original map offering” and deliver what Activision says will be “a refreshing multiplayer experience within these familiar environments.”
The icing on the Call of Duty cake will be the addition of four brand-new sandbox-styled environments, made up of three Battle Maps that’ll play host to Modern Warfare III’s Ground War and Invasion game modes and an evolved War Mode map that first arrived in 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will launch on Friday November 10, 2023, across the PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Series consoles, and PC.
