Nintendo Remaking Game Boy Classic Link’s Awakening for Switch

Back in 1993, a now-iconic Legend of Zelda game made its way to the Game Boy: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Among the series’ fabled history, this one game has managed to stand out as one of the best in the series, remaining as a personal favorite to longtime fans for its entire 26-year history. Fans of the game can rejoice as Nintendo revealed that a remake is in works during the latest Direct.

To end a Nintendo Direct, the company always chooses something equally surprising and exciting. This time it was The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake, which caught everyone off guard as the trailer opened ambiguously. We questioned what we were about to see, with the rolling waves roaring in the storm. Then an iconic scene that many of us know too well plays: Link on his boat, which is struck by lightning and leaves him shipwrecked. The animated detail in this scene from the trailer shows a lot of promise for the game itself, and it will be interesting to see if more animation will appear in the game.

The main gameplay shown doesn’t seem to change much from the Game Boy original, with much of what is shown being an almost direct remake. Although the shiny three-dimensional polish makes the world spring to life. The game will also retain the classic top-down view that existed in the original. The game is set to arrive sometime in 2019.

You can see Link’s Awakening in action in the trailer below.
