Last night we received reports of an outage of PlayStation’s PSN service, responsible for helping players login, play games online, socialize with friends and track their trophies. Now it’s the following day, and PlayStation Network is still down for users globally. The outage is stopping gamers from playing online, and starting on a Friday night and running through to a Saturday is probably the worst timing for such an outage, as many have the weekend off work or school.
The outage was first acknowledged by PlayStation a little before 9PM ET late last night, which they quaintly described in a post on X (formerly Twitter) as “some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN”. That was certainly a light way to phrase it, as over 12 hours later the service is still down with no signs of recovery anytime soon, and no additional comment from PlayStation.
Unusually, Sony has been completely silent on the outage after the initial reporting of the issue, despite how prolonged the problem has been ongoing. As you’d expect, the quote posts on Sony’s only comment about “some users” experiencing outages are full of jokes, memes, and people laughing their way through the pain of having their gaming weekend plans foiled by the PSN outage. Whilst there is still no word on what exactly has gone wrong with PSN, early rumors point towards a potential DDoS attack of some kind – but take this baseless speculation with a grain of salt.
We’ll be sure to update you on when PlayStation Network’s services are back online. What are you going to do in the meantime? Do you play on other platforms, or is PS5 your main gaming system?
