Resident Evil 4 Remake: How to Change Difficulty

Choosing a difficulty level can be tough, especially when playing a survival horror game. You never know what kind of horrifying monsters will try to kill you, and being able to eliminate your enemies quickly may alleviate some of the fear. However, making the game too easy is not ideal, so you want to ensure that you have picked the right mode. You should ideally get enough challenge so that it makes the game fun but not overwhelming.

Unfortunately, Resident Evil 4 Remake is not straightforward with its game modes. Although you can pick your difficulty level before starting the game, it does not inform you about the ability to change the mode during a playthrough. Some games allow players to shift between difficulty levels freely, while others do not. If you want to know whether you can change the difficulty in Resident Evil 4 Remake, this guide will teach you how!

Changing Difficulty Mode in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake Difficulty Levels

Resident Evil 4 Remake offers four difficulty levels: Assisted, Standard, Hardcore, and Professional. Three of them are available from the beginning, while the last one, Professional can only be unlocked after completing the game once. Unfortunately, you cannot change the difficulty mode once you have chosen it.

The only wiggle room the game gives you is by allowing you to drop the difficulty level from Standard to Assisted in the Game Over screen. You cannot raise the level, though. So, if you pick Standard at the beginning, you cannot alter it to Hardcore later.

This is mainly because the title contains several achievements tied to your chosen difficulty level. For example, you can get the Peerless Agent Trophy if you complete the main story in Professional mode with an S+ rank. If the developer lets players change the difficulty, some people may exploit this feature by altering the mode after beating the final boss and getting the achievement unfairly.
