Sega’s mobile Sonic game Sonic Runners is being shut down

Often it is sad to find out that a game is shutting down, but then again there are times where you wish you climb Mt. Everest and simply shout (in the nicest way possible) somebody finally grew a brain. This is precisely the case with today’s news that mobile Sonic game Sonic Runners, another endless running game, will be shutting down as of July 27th. This means the game will be available to download up until July 27th, however once this date hits Sonic Runners will no longer be playable due to it running exclusively online. Here is the notice of cancellation from Sega:

We would like express out most sincere thanks to all our users for their patronage and support.

The Sonic Runners team hopes that you enjoyed the journey as much as we did.

5/27, 9AM (UTC): Red Star Ring sales end.
7/27, 9AM (UTC): Closure of service.

Any Red Star Rings purchased prior to 5/27, 9AM (UTC) will not be useable or redeemable after closure of service so please use all Red Star Rings by 7/27, 9AM (UTC).

Thank you for playing SONIC RUNNERS.

I don’t really thing this is a huge loss for the mobile market, and for those really in need of a Sonic game Sega does also have the annoying Sonic Dash games. Personally though if you want to play a Sonic game you should go and play it on a dedicated console where you certainly get a better experience, however we do say sorry for your loss to those who really liked this game.
